Weeks of Rail Disruption Begin at Charing Cross and Waterloo East
Passengers travelling into central London are facing three weeks of rail disruption after London Charing Cross and Waterloo East closed on 26 July for major engineering works. The stations will remain closed until 17 August, with no Southeastern services calling at either station during this period.
The £20 million Network Rail project includes replacing 1.8 kilometres of track, improving drainage at Waterloo East and carrying out structural repairs to Hungerford Bridge.
While the work is taking place, Southeastern services will be diverted to London Bridge, Cannon Street, Victoria and Blackfriars, with some trains terminating earlier than usual.
Charing Cross and Waterloo East are expected to reopen on 17 August, although further weekend closures are already planned for 22–23 August and 10–11 October.
The disruption is expected to affect thousands of commuters and leisure travellers heading into central London over the coming weeks.
For PCO drivers, the disruption could increase demand around London Bridge, Victoria, Cannon Street and Blackfriars as passengers look for alternative ways to complete their journeys.
Trains across the Southeastern network will also run to revised timetables, with some services terminating earlier than usual. That could mean more passengers relying on Uber, Bolt and other private hire services, particularly during the morning and evening peaks.
