Mayor of London Says TfL Can’t Control Uber Fares or Driver Pay

Amid growing concerns around the pricing policy of Uber and other ride-hailing platforms, Sadiq Khan has confirmed that TfL cannot regulate PHV fares or address driver pay disputes.

The response came after Neil Garratt of the City Hall Conservatives asked whether the Mayor agrees that Uber and other operators overcharge passengers and underpay drivers? 

In a written response, Sadiq Khan stated that the Private Hire Vehicles (London) Act 1998 prohibits TfL from controlling private hire fares or disputes related to fares. These issues belong to employment tribunals, not TfL.

TfL’s role in the private hire sector is limited to licensing and ensuring safety and compliance standards are met.

Here’s the exact response of Sadiq Khan: “Transport for London (TfL) regulates private hire vehicle (PHV) services in accordance with the Private Hire Vehicles (London) Act 1998. There is no provision in the 1998 Act to regulate PHV fares. Issues regarding drivers’ pay and conditions are for specialist tribunals and are not matters that TfL can regulate.”
