City Hall Hearing Examines TfL’s Taxi and Private Hire Strategy
Transport for London’s (TFL) Taxi and Private Hire Action Plan, which was published in March 2024 is set to be examined on Thursday 15 May. The examination will take place at City Hall and aims to gather opinions of the key industry figures on whether the plan delivers on its stated objectives.
According to TfL, the plan aims to modernise regulations and improve standards in both taxi and private hire sectors. However, the plan has largely received negative feedback since its release.
The General Secretary of the Licensed Taxi Drivers’ Association (LTDA), Steve McNamara says that the plan fails to properly support the licensed taxi industry and doesn’t provide drivers with enough protection against the challenges they face on a daily basis, such as the growing dominance of private hire drivers and the lack of proper enforcement.
Grant Davis, who is the chairman of the London Cab Drivers Club also raised concerns over the growing number of private hire drivers in London. He said TfL has failed to act decisively on a subject that directly affects black cab drivers’ ability to earn a living.
Overall, the experts say that the plan puts pressure on licensed drivers while creating a more relaxed environment for PCO drivers. Highlighting this issue will be the key theme during the committee hearing.
