Disabled Access Missing on EV Charging Points in Over a Third of Councils

A Freedom of Information (FOI) research by Vauxhall reveals that more than a third of UK councils lack suitable EV charging points for disabled drivers. 

The research involved 289 councils, of which 111 responded that they have no on-street EV charging options specially designed for disabled drivers. The research is part of Vauxhall’s Electric Streets of Britain initiative, which aims to make EV charging more accessible to 40% of UK households without off-street parking.

There are over 16 million disabled people in the UK, of whom 1.35 million disabled drivers will be partially or fully reliant on public chargers by 2035.

Steve Catlin, the Managing Director of Vauxhall, says that limited access to public chargers is a major barrier for disabled drivers wanting to switch to EVs in the UK, particularly those who can’t charge their vehicles at home. He also said that the number of councils lacking suitable charging infrastructure for disabled drivers is concerning. We need to make sure that all drivers can easily access charging points to accelerate the UK’s shift to EVs.

Vauxhall launched the Electric Streets of Britain initiative in 2023 with a database where UK drivers wanting residential EV chargers installed near them can register. So far, over 12,000 streets have been identified across the country that need on-street EV charging infrastructure.
