Complete Guide to Uber Ride Types & Car Categories in London
Open the Uber app, and the number of ride types and categories can quickly get confusing. What’s actually different between UberX and Comfort? Where does Exec sit? And, more importantly, which category does your car fall into?
For London drivers, Uber has specific vehicle requirements covering the model, age and condition of your car. These requirements determine which Uber car categories you qualify for and the types of trips you can accept.
Qualifying for multiple ride types can help increase your take-home pay, so it’s important to understand Uber categories in London, when you can switch between them, and how to choose options that match your vehicle, experience and driving goals.

Uber Vehicle Requirements
Every Uber car category in London has its own vehicle criteria, but every car must first meet basic requirements.
- A private hire vehicle (PHV) licence from TfL. This licence lets a car operate as a minicab.
- Private hire motor insurance.
- A 4-door car or people carrier, licensed for at least 4 passengers.
- A vehicle manufactured in 2008 or later.
- Good condition, no cosmetic damage and no commercial branding.
Uber’s vehicle requirements are not the only requirements you need to meet. TfL also has its own rules for private hire vehicles in London. Any car licensed for the first time since 1 January 2023 must be zero-emission capable and meet the Euro 6 emissions standard.
These are the basic requirements to drive in any Uber category in London. Requirements can change over time, so it’s best to check the latest information on the official Uber and TfL websites before choosing or switching categories.
What Vehicles Are Eligible For Uber In 2026?
Uber updated its vehicle eligibility rules for Comfort, Exec and Lux in London. From 1 August 2026, any new vehicle added to an account for these tiers must meet the updated requirements.
Uber’s eligible vehicle list shows which models qualify for each category. So always confirm the tier before you hire or renew a car.
If your vehicle has already been accepted for one of these tiers, it will not lose eligibility immediately. Uber’s official page says the company will email affected drivers.

Standard Uber Tier
What is UberX?
UberX is Uber’s standard ride and one of the most popular options for riders. Any car with a valid PHV licence from an accepted council that meets the baseline rules above can drive on UberX. For most new drivers, UberX is the starting point.
What is Uber Electric (Uber Green)?
Uber Electric, also known as Uber Green, is the future of the ride-hailing industry in London, with Uber aiming to have every car on its London app fully electric.
This category is for fully electric cars only. Hybrids and plug-in hybrids do not qualify. The car must also be licensed to carry at least 4 passengers, so two-seater electric cars do not qualify.

What is Uber Comfort?
Uber Comfort is for mid-sized cars with more space. Your model must be on Uber’s eligible list and, in London, be no more than 6 years old. Drivers currently qualify for Uber Comfort can also opt in to Business Comfort trips.

UberX vs Comfort: what is the difference?
Both categories carry 4 passengers, but the vehicle requirements are different.
UberX accepts licensed cars that meet Uber’s basic vehicle requirements. The car must be suitable for carrying at least 4 passengers.
Uber Comfort requires a newer model with a more spacious cabin. Uber also provides a list of eligible vehicles that can be used for Comfort rides.
There is a bonus. A car that qualifies for Comfort also works on UberX. If it is fully electric, it can also work on Uber Green. That gives you trip requests across more than one category. Uber may also apply rating and trip criteria to your account, so check your app.

Uber for Larger Groups
What is UberXL, and how many seats does it have?
UberXL is for groups of 5 people and extra luggage. The car must seat at least 6 passengers in addition to the driver, and Uber describes XL as a way to earn higher fares with a high-capacity vehicle.
Uber Exec XXL is for premium group trips. The car must be licensed to carry at least 7 passengers, be no more than 6 years old in London, and the driver must have a rating of 4.85 or above.

Premium Uber Tier
What is Uber Executive (Exec)?
Uber Exec is their posh option with highly experienced drivers. In London, they’ve got strict rules and only black, grey or dark blue Mercedes, BMWs, Audis, Jaguars or Lexuses, and only the saloon versions, nothing older than five years.
The driver needs a near-perfect 4.92 rating, at least 50 trips under their belt, and a proper assessment.
What is Uber Lux, and is there Uber Black in the UK?
Uber Black is the name used for Uber’s premium category in some countries. In the UK, the closest equivalents are Uber Exec and Uber Lux. Uber Lux is Uber’s most premium category in London.
Uber Exec vs Lux
The vehicle requirements are similar, so the main difference is the driver’s experience and trip requirements.
Uber Exec drivers need to complete at least 50 trips to qualify for Exec.
Uber Lux drivers need to complete more than 1,000 trips to qualify for Lux, while maintaining the required rating.
Every vehicle that qualifies for Lux also qualifies for Exec. So, if you’re already driving on Exec, complete 1,000 rides while keeping your rating high, and you can move up to Lux, giving you the opportunity to earn more from premium trips.
Accessibility and Opt-in Trip Types
- Uber Assist is for older riders and riders with a disability who need extra help. The car must fit folding wheelchairs, walkers and collapsible scooters. You need a 4.7 rating, over 500 trips in London and completed online disability equality training.
- Uber Access is for wheelchair accessible vehicles (WAVs) with a ramp or lift. Riders stay in their wheelchairs. The same rating and trip rules apply. You also need certified accessibility training.
- Uber Pet and UberX Priority are opt-in trip types. The vehicle requirements are the same as UberX.
Choosing the Right Uber Category for Your Earnings
Uber categories of cars are decided by three things: your car, its age and your rating. Before you hire, lease, or buy a car, check two things:
- Is the exact model on Uber’s eligible vehicle list for the category you want?
- Will it still meet the age rule for the full length of your contract?
For new drivers, UberX can be a starting point while you build your rating. If you want more group trips, a qualifying 7-seater can open up UberXL. For premium work, look at newer saloons on Uber’s Exec eligibility list and make sure your rating meets the category requirement.
The key is to choose a car based on the categories you want to drive in, not just the car you like.
